Take an Eye Test Online

The majority of what we experience in life comes to us through our sense of sight. Because we only have one pair of eyes to last our life time, it is important to take good care of them.

The following information will help you and your loved ones to See More of Life.

The Importance of An Eye Exam

Eye fatigue and headaches can often be prevented with proper visual correction. Most eye diseases (glaucoma, cataracts, etc) can be treated if detected early. Only your Eye Care Professional is able to complete a comprehensive eye examination.

How the Eye Works
When the eye presents no visual defects, images of objects, close or far away, focus clearly on the retina. The images are then transmitted to the brain.

Eye with no visual defect
You can see clearly at all distances.

How does Blurring Occur?
When the images of objects are not focused on the retina, vision is blurred. This is due to visual defects.

Myopia or Short-sightedness
You do not see distant objects clearly.

The eye is too long and the images form in front of the retina.

Hyperopia or Long-sightedness
You find it difficult to focus on near objects.
(You often get tired or suffer from headaches)

The eye is too short and the images form behind the retina.

Astigmatism
You see some lines blurred.
Both near and distant lines (vertical, horizontal or oblique) do not appear clear because your cornea is irregularly shaped.

Presbyopia
You begin to have difficulty viewing near objects.
Virtually everyone is affected after the age of 40. The crystalline lens loses its elasticity and the ability to focus on close objects or small print gradually declines with age. Presbyopia will occur in addition to previous visual defects such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

Choosing the Right Lens (Click Here to Find the Right Lens)Your choice will depend on your prescription, your lifestyle and your budget. There are many lens designs, materials, coatings and treatments available.

Follow these steps with your Eye Care Professional to find out the best combination for you.

Step I : Lens Design
  • Single Vision Lenses are used to correct common visual defects such as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.
  • Reading glasses can be used to correct presbyopia. They will correct near vision but objects at other distances will be blurred. It is often not convenient and 2 pairs of spectacles may be needed.

  • Bifocals offer far and near correction but the obvious line in the middle can affect vision and show the age of the wearer.

  • Progressive Lenses offer the best solution to presbyopia. Since the development of Varilux®, the world's first progressive lens, people above 40 have been able to enjoy natural vision from near to far. Varilux® lenses offer wide, uninterrupted fields of vision, plus youthful appearance.

Step II : Lens Materials

Now it's time to talk to your Eye Care Professional about your hobbies, profession and fashion tastes, so together you can determine the lens material that will give you maximum comfort and the best vision possible.

  • Glass Lenses, while very scratch-resistant, are heavy and easily broken. They are not recommended for children or active people.

  • Plastic Lenses have become the most common lenses through-out the world. They are impact-resistant and half the weight of glass lenses.

  • High index Lenses are lighter and thinner than standard lenses, and are recommended for medium and strong prescriptions. The can be made in both glass or plastic.

Step III : Lens Coatings
A number of treatments now can be added to your lenses to enhance their performance.
  • Scratch Resistant Coatings increase the durability of plastic lenses. They should always be applied to both sides of the lens. Essilor Titus™ lenses have the world's best scratch-resistance. With these lenses you can be assured of perfect clarity and comfort throughout the life of your prescription.

  • Anti-Reflective (AR) Coatings (Also called Multi-Coated) give you the clearest vision by eliminating unwanted reflections. They also improve your appearance by allowing people to see your eyes and not the reflection on the lenses.
Crizal® is the "all-in-one" coating that offers you the best combination of Anti-Reflection, Scratch-Resistance and Easy-Cleaning.

  • UV Coatings protect your eyes by blocking the portion of UV light from the sun that can damage your eyes. Essilor Airwear® gives 100% protection from UV rays.

  • Photochromic Lenses darken in sunlight and lighten indoors. Essilor Transitions® lenses are photochromic lenses that also offer UV protection.

  • Tints can be applied to plastic lenses in a wide range of colors and densities. However, tinting alone will not protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays. Before buying sunglasses, make sure they also include UV protection.

Your Lifestyle And Your Lenses

Your Eyes & Your Computer

Working in front of a computer can place great visual stress on the eyes. This can result in headaches, blurred vision and sore eyes.

Crizal® crystal clear lenses provide a comfortable solution by eliminating lens reflections. If you are presbyopic, Varilux® progressive lenses will enable you to focus from the keyboard to the screen and far off objects.

Your Eyes & Driving
Good vision is fundamental for safe driving. On sunny days, you need good sungalss lenses to avoid blinking or squinting. Night driving is especially demanding due to ghost images and reflections. Crizal® crystal clear lenses greatly reduce these ghost images and eye fatigue.

Driving safely also requires good vision at all distances. If you are presbyopic, Varilux® progressive lenses will enable you to see all distances, from your road map to signs far away.

Your Children's Eyes

You want your children to have the best and safest lenses that will withstand their daily activities, games, fights and quiet moments. Plastic lenses are the safest option as glass lenses can break and hurt your child. A good scratch resistant coating on both sides of the lens prevents damage during daily usage. Essilor Titus™ lenses provide the best protection from scratches, ensuring your child's lenses offer perfect clarity.
