Correcting Eyesight |
|
Eighty percent of the information we receive from the world around us reaches
us via our eyes. Good eyesight is essential, especially given modern-day
lifestyles: in industrialized countries, four to six out of ten people wear
some form of vision correction. All women and men today are concerned - or will
be tomorrow. These consumers, who are increasingly well-informed, expect
corrective lenses that are more effective, more comfortable, more attractive,
and best adapted to their style of living.
Essilor, the US$ 2 billion world leader in its field, is active in all sectors
of the ophthalmic optics market. Essilor is a truly international group,
maintaining production facilities and distribution subsidiaries throughout the
world, and generating over four-fifths of its business outside France, its
home-base country.

 |
|
|
Essilor's
dominating position is based on three assets:
-
innovative, high-quality products,
-
optimal worldwide structure that is highly reactive,
-
teams designed to create synergies within their numerous specialities.

set international standards
|
Essilor is the world's leading CORRECTIVE LENS manufacturer. It owes this
stature to two major inventions: progressive lenses (Varilux®), which
revolutionized correction for presbyopia, and organic lenses (Orma®), which
combines light weight and impact resistance.
Our R&D teams are exploring three main areas:
-
New materials for thinner, lighter, more shock-resistant, photo
chromic lenses
-
New optical surfaces, for better effectiveness and greater
visual comfort and
-
Surface coatings to improve lens transparency (anti-reflection),
appearance (tinting), and durability (scratch-resistance).

A unique international Network to serve All Markets |
 |
Ever since the first branch of the Societe des Lunetiers opened in London at
the late nineteenth century, Essilor has always envisioned its expansion on an
international scale. Today, mass production takes place at several plants
across the globe. The prescription lens sector, which is taking on greater
significance, has been decentralized among subsidiaries and branches, thus
covering most industrialized countries.

A wide variety of skills serving a single profession |
Essilor was created in 1972 as a result of the merger between the two leading
French corrective lens manufacturers, Essel (la Societe des Lunetiers) and
Silor. The merger resulted in the birth of a strong and original corporate
culture. The men and women of Essilor are united by an awareness of being
professionals, the profession which demands ongoing adaptability to newly
developing needs and yet always caters to the same fundamental and universal
goal: improving vision.
